The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You learn how children grow and develop, how to plan and run a programme that suits each child, how to keep them safe, and how to work with families and other staff. The course covers child development, curriculum and pedagogy, health and safety, legal and ethical requirements, and working with children who need extra support.
This is a diploma-level qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework. It sits above a certificate III and below a bachelor degree. Because it is a vocational qualification, it is built around units of competency rather than the semester-and-credit-point structure you see in a university degree. Each unit describes a specific job task you must be able to do, and you are assessed on whether you can do it. The course is delivered over one year, and the exact term structure, unit sequence and volume of learning are set by the provider. Work-integrated learning is a core part of this qualification. You complete a professional placement in a regulated early childhood service, where you work alongside educators and are assessed on the job. That placement is what makes the diploma practical rather than theoretical.
You finish with skills in observing and documenting children's learning, designing experiences that match their interests and stage of development, maintaining a safe and healthy environment, and communicating with families. You also learn the compliance side of the job: the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework, child protection obligations, and workplace health and safety. These are the things every early childhood service in Australia has to follow, so they come up in every unit.
This course suits people who want to start working in early childhood education reasonably quickly, or who are already working in the sector and want to move into a room leader or lead educator role. It also suits people who are not sure about a full degree yet but want a qualification that gets them into the workforce. If you are an international student, you need to meet the English requirement published by the provider. The common standard for courses at this level is IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with higher scores for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced are accepted as equivalents, and the provider may also accept its own English programme. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While you study, your visa generally allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, and you should confirm the current fee, intake dates and English requirements on the official page before you apply.
Employers include long day care centres, community preschools, kindergartens, family day care schemes, and outside school hours care providers. The qualification is recognised across Australia, and demand for early childhood educators is steady because of national child-to-educator ratios and ongoing workforce shortages in the sector.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,250 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
