The Diploma of Remedial Massage is a two-year qualification that trains you to assess and treat soft tissue problems, muscle tightness, joint stiffness, postural issues, sports injuries and the aches that come from desk work or heavy physical jobs. You learn anatomy and physiology at a level that lets you reason about what you're feeling under your hands, then practise the treatment techniques themselves: Swedish massage, deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, sports massage and remedial exercises you can teach clients to do at home.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points. At this level, most units are practical and competency-based, meaning you're assessed on what you can actually do, not just what you can write. You'll typically study across semesters, with a mix of classroom theory, supervised clinic hours and independent study. Your clinical practice happens in a student clinic, where you take real clients under the supervision of qualified massage therapists, and many courses also arrange external placements in sports clubs, physiotherapy practices or wellness centres. Assessment combines practical demonstrations, case studies, written tests and a log of treatments you've completed.
By the end you should be able to take a client history, run a physical assessment, work out which tissues are causing the problem, choose a treatment approach, deliver it safely and then advise the client on stretches, strengthening and habits that will stop the problem coming back. You'll also cover infection control, legal and ethical obligations, record keeping, and how to run the business side of a practice, pricing, insurance, marketing and client retention. Anatomy, pathology and contraindications are woven through everything, because knowing when not to treat someone matters as much as knowing how to treat them.
This diploma suits people who want to work with their hands, enjoy understanding how the body moves, and are comfortable talking to clients about their health and lifestyle. It's a good fit if you're starting out in the health field, changing careers from something physical or office-based, or already working in fitness, sport or beauty and want to add a clinical skill. Graduates can register with Australian massage professional associations and work as remedial massage therapists, and the qualification also gives you a pathway into further study in areas like myotherapy, physiotherapy or health science if you want to go on. International students should check the official CRICOS page for current tuition, intake dates and English requirements, the Student visa also has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs, and student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. Graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on the rules at the time.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$22,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
