The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is a two-year qualification for people who lead learning inside organisations. You study how adults learn, how to design training that actually changes what people can do, and how to assess whether it worked. Typical units cover instructional design, assessment and evaluation, adult learning principles, managing a training function, and the compliance side of vocational education in Australia. It sits at graduate level, so the expectation is that you already have some work or study behind you and can handle theory alongside practice.
Australian graduate diplomas sit between a bachelor degree and a master's on the AQF. A master's is one to two years; a graduate diploma is shorter and more focused, and this one runs two years full-time. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need a certain total to graduate. Most institutions teach across two semesters a year, sometimes three trimesters, with breaks in between. Assessment is usually a mix of written work, projects, presentations and practical tasks rather than one big exam at the end.
Because this is a learning and management qualification, work-integrated learning matters. You may be asked to design or evaluate training for a real organisation, or complete a placement or project in a workplace. Some courses include a capstone unit where you pull everything together into one substantial piece of work. If you are already employed in training, HR or education support, you can often use your own workplace as the site for your assignments.
You learn to write learning outcomes that mean something, build session plans and resources, run group training, and check whether learners have gained the skills they came for. You also pick up the management side: budgeting a training function, leading a small team, working with industry to identify skill needs, and keeping records that satisfy Australian vocational education regulators. Group work is common, and so is presenting. By the end you should be able to walk into an organisation, work out what training is needed, build it, deliver it and report on the result.
This suits trainers, assessors, HR staff, team leaders and teachers who want to move into learning and development management, or people with a bachelor degree in another field who now work in training. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification in the learning field and are prepared for two years of study. If your goal is to register as a school teacher, this is not the qualification for that path, check the requirements of the relevant state teaching authority. Entry usually requires a bachelor degree or equivalent, and international applicants need to meet the English requirement published for the course.
Fees are listed on the CRICOS register. For unit lists, intake dates, English equivalents and credit arrangements, check the official course page and confirm the details directly with the institution before you apply.
Graduates work across corporate learning teams, government departments, registered training organisations, community education providers and industry associations. If you are an international graduate, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may let you stay and work after you finish, depending on your circumstances. While you study, your student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight. Confirm visa conditions with the Department of Home Affairs.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$24,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
