The Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management is a practical, industry-facing qualification for people who want to work in tourism and travel operations. You study how tourism businesses actually run: visitor experiences, tour operations, destination marketing, customer service, budgeting and financial reporting, workplace health and safety, and the legal and sustainability issues that shape the sector. Assessment is mostly competency-based, meaning you demonstrate that you can perform tasks to industry standard rather than just pass exams.
This advanced diploma sits at the diploma/advanced diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework. Delivery is typically over 1.5 years of full-time study, organised into study periods rather than the semesters you might see in a bachelor degree. You complete a sequence of units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass all required units to graduate. Many providers build in a work-integrated learning component, such as a placement or industry project with a tour operator, visitor information centre, hotel or events business, because tourism employers expect hands-on experience. If a placement is part of your course, confirm the hours and host arrangements with the provider before you enrol.
You build skills in rostering and leading staff, managing budgets, preparing quotes and itineraries, interpreting tourism data, selling and promoting products, and handling difficult customer situations. Cultural awareness and responsible tourism practices are woven through the units, since Australia's visitor economy depends on both domestic and international travellers. Group work, role plays and simulated workplace tasks are common, so you graduate able to step into a supervisory role rather than needing months of retraining.
This course suits school leavers who want a faster, work-focused pathway than a three-year bachelor degree, career changers moving into hospitality or travel, and people already working in tourism who want formal recognition and a promotion. It also provides a route into further study, with credit toward a bachelor degree in tourism, hospitality or business, subject to the receiving institution's rules. International students should check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for entry requirements, English proficiency (IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents), tuition fees, intake dates and unit details. The Student visa also has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs, separate from the provider's requirement. While studying, a Student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during the course, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream if they meet the criteria.
These roles are found across Australia's visitor economy: tour and transport operators, travel agencies, online travel companies, hotels and resorts, regional tourism organisations, visitor information centres, airlines and airports, cruise and ferry operators, wineries and nature-based tourism businesses, and government tourism bodies. Some graduates use the qualification as a stepping stone into a bachelor degree in tourism, hospitality or business, with credit granted for completed units of study.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
