The Advanced Diploma of Information Technology is a two-year qualification for people who want practical, job-ready IT skills without committing to a full degree. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree, and is delivered through units of study rather than a single set of subjects. Expect to spend your time on networking, systems administration, programming fundamentals, database work, cybersecurity basics and supporting users in an organisation. Assessment is mostly hands-on: configuring equipment in a lab, building and querying databases, writing scripts, troubleshooting simulated incidents and documenting what you did.
Australian diplomas are built from units of study, each carrying a set number of credit points. You enrol in a set sequence across semesters or trimesters, and you need to pass the required units to graduate. There is no research thesis at this level. Where the course includes a capstone or integrated project, it usually pulls together the networking, systems and security units into one piece of work, often based on a real or simulated client scenario. Some providers build in a work placement or industry project; check the official page to confirm what is available.
By the end you should be able to install and maintain networks, manage servers and operating systems, write basic code, work with databases, apply security practices and explain technical problems to people who are not technical. Those are the skills employers actually screen for in entry-level IT roles.
This suits school leavers who want a faster route into work than a three-year degree, career changers moving into IT, and people already doing informal tech support who want a recognised qualification. If you later decide to study further, you may be able to use some units as credit towards a bachelor degree, depending on the receiving institution's rules.
International students study on a Student visa, which allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session. After finishing, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available if you meet the requirements. English proficiency is required for entry; IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm entry requirements, unit lists and start dates on the official page.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$30,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
