The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a hands-on qualification for people who want to work directly with young children in Australian early learning services. You'll learn how children grow and develop from birth to five, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to observe and document what children are learning, and how to keep them safe and well. You'll also cover the legal and ethical side of the job: the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework, child protection, and work health and safety. Most of the course is practical. You'll spend time in a real early childhood service on placement, working alongside educators, and you'll build a portfolio of your own observations and learning stories.
This diploma sits at level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. It's a vocational qualification, not a university degree, and it's usually delivered over 1.5 years full time. That might mean three or four study periods (semesters or trimesters), depending on how the college timetables it. Each unit of study carries credit points, and you need to pass all the required units to graduate. There's no research thesis at this level. The capstone is your professional placement, where you put everything together under supervision. Assessment is mostly practical: you'll be observed working with children, write reflections, complete projects, and answer knowledge questions. Some of it is online, some face to face, and some in the workplace.
What you actually learn: how to set up a room that invites children to explore, how to talk with families about their child's day, how to support children with additional needs, and how to follow the rules that keep services accountable. You'll practise writing learning stories, running group times, and responding to incidents. The placement is where the real learning happens. You'll be in a service with real children, real routines, and real paperwork. By the end, you should be able to walk into a room and know what to do.
This course suits people who like working with children and want a job at the end of it, not just a theory. It's also a stepping stone if you're thinking about a bachelor degree in early childhood education later. If you're an international student, you'll need to meet English requirements. The college publishes its own English standard, and the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate threshold for the Student visa. While you study, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. Check the official CRICOS page and the college's website for exact entry requirements, English equivalents, and course structure.
These roles are in demand across Australia, especially in growing suburbs and regional areas. Most graduates work in the private and community early learning sector, but some move into government-run kindergartens or school-based programs. The diploma also gives you credit towards a bachelor degree in early childhood education if you want to become a registered teacher later.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.

Student Visa Student Visa Subclass 500 Refusals: The Reasons That Come Up Most
Most subclass 500 refusals trace back to four things: the Genuine Student requirement, funds evidence, course-progression logic, or an incomplete CoE. Here's what each one actually means and how to fix it before you apply.
