The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. It sits at the diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree but above a certificate IV. You learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run group work, advocate for people dealing with housing, income, family or health problems, and keep the paperwork that community organisations and government funders require.
Delivery is usually split into study periods across the two years, with each unit of study carrying credit points. You will cover case management, counselling and communication skills, working with culturally diverse clients, legal and ethical responsibilities, and the safety and risk frameworks that apply in the sector. Most diplomas in this field include a supervised work placement, often in a community centre, family support service, homelessness service, disability organisation or aged care provider. Placement hours are part of the course, not an add-on, and you are assessed on what you do there as well as in class.
What you actually gain is practical: how to conduct an intake interview, write case notes that stand up to scrutiny, refer someone to the right service, de-escalate a tense situation, and work inside the boundaries of your role. You also learn the Australian service system, who funds what, how referrals move between state and federal programmes, and how to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people from migrant backgrounds. Assessment is a mix of written tasks, role plays, projects and placement reports.
This course suits people already working in care or support who want a formal qualification, career changers who want to get into community services without committing to a three-year degree, and international students who meet the English requirement for this field. Note that social work registration and many counselling roles need a degree or higher; a diploma gets you into support work, casework assistance and team leader roles. Confirm the current structure, placement arrangements and English requirements on the official CRICOS listing and with Lead College directly before you apply.
These roles are found in not-for-profit community organisations, local councils, state government departments, family and youth services, disability providers, aged care providers and multicultural settlement services. Some graduates continue into a bachelor degree in social work or community services with credit for prior study, which is the usual path to professional social work registration. International graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, and while studying, a student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight. Check current visa rules with the Department of Home Affairs.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$30,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
