The Advanced Diploma of Program Management is a one-year qualification for people who already understand projects and want to manage groups of them. You'll learn how programs differ from projects: how to set up governance, align multiple projects to one strategic objective, manage benefits, and coordinate resources across workstreams. Units cover program scheduling, stakeholder engagement, risk and issue management, financial control, procurement, and quality. Assessment is competency-based, so you'll be asked to produce program documents, lead simulated meetings, and respond to scenarios drawn from real workplaces rather than sit traditional exams.
This is an AQF qualification at diploma level, delivered over one year of full-time study. It sits below a bachelor degree and is built around units of competency rather than the semester-and-credit-point structure you'd see in a university degree. Providers often run it across several study periods a year, with intakes throughout the calendar. There is no research thesis at this level. Work-integrated learning is common in program management qualifications because the skills are practical, so expect case studies, role plays, and possibly a placement or workplace project depending on how the provider structures delivery. Confirm the exact unit list, study periods, and placement arrangements on the official course page.
Skills you come away with include building a program business case, mapping dependencies between projects, running governance forums, tracking benefits against targets, managing program budgets, and reporting to senior sponsors. You'll also practise the softer side: negotiating with project managers who don't report to you, handling competing priorities, and keeping stakeholders informed when things shift. These are the skills employers ask for when they promote someone from project to program level.
This course suits a few types of people. Experienced project managers who keep being handed several projects at once. Team leaders and coordinators moving into a formal program role. People with trade or technical backgrounds who want to step up into management. And international students looking for an Australian qualification in a practical field. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is running, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available once you finish, depending on your circumstances. Check the current rules with the Department of Home Affairs. English requirements for entry are set by the provider; IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced, and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Student visa has its own separate English threshold. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register.
Australian industries that hire these roles include construction and infrastructure, information technology, defence, health, education, banking and finance, and all levels of government. Program management skills also transfer to not-for-profits and utilities, where large capital or service programs are common.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
