The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a hands-on qualification for people who want to run the show in hotels, restaurants, events and resorts. You'll cover the practical side of the industry, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office, food safety, bar and cocktail operations, alongside the management side: rostering, budgeting, stock control, marketing, human resources and compliance with Australian liquor and gaming regulations. Assessment is mostly competency-based, so you demonstrate skills by doing them, not just writing about them.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. This advanced diploma runs 1.5 years full time, typically across three or four study periods (semesters or trimesters depending on intake). You accumulate credit as you pass each unit, and many providers let you fast-track if you already hold a Certificate III or IV in Hospitality. There's no research thesis at this level, the capstone is usually a work-based project or a supervised placement where you manage a real service period or event. Work-integrated learning is central: hospitality employers expect you to have logged hours in a commercial kitchen, restaurant or front desk before you graduate.
By the end you should be able to write a roster that meets award wages, cost a menu, handle a difficult customer, run a safe workplace under WHS law, and read a profit and loss statement for a venue. You'll also pick up the soft skills that keep staff: briefing a team, dealing with suppliers, and managing functions from enquiry to pack-down. The course suits school leavers who want a fast route into supervisory work, career changers who've done their time on the floor, and international students who want an Australian qualification they can use back home or on the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. While studying, a student visa usually allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, which many hospitality students use to build local experience. English entry is typically IELTS 6.0–6.5 or equivalent. Check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for current fees, intakes and recognition of prior learning.
These roles sit across Australia's accommodation, food service, pubs, clubs, catering and events sectors, from city hotels to regional tourism operators.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$22,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
