The Advanced Diploma of Counselling is a two-year qualification for people who want to work as counsellors in Australia. It sits below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework, but it is a serious, practice-focused award. You learn how to build a working relationship with a client, how to listen without rushing to advice, and how to work with people in distress. The course covers counselling theory, human development across the lifespan, mental health and wellbeing, ethics and professional boundaries, group work, and family and relationship counselling. You also study how to work with clients from different cultural backgrounds, which matters in Australia's multicultural cities and towns.
Australian qualifications are built from units of study, each with a credit point value. A full-time load is usually eight units a year, and you need to pass a set number of credit points to graduate. Most institutions run two semesters a year, with some using three trimesters. Assessment is a mix of essays, case studies, role plays, supervised counselling practice and exams. Because counselling is a practical field, the course includes supervised practice hours and a placement, where you work with real clients under the guidance of a qualified supervisor. You record your hours, reflect on your sessions and receive feedback. That placement is often the part students remember most, and it is what employers ask about at interview.
By the end you can conduct an intake interview, assess risk, keep case notes to a professional standard, apply a counselling framework, and know when to refer a client on. You learn the limits of your role and how to look after yourself in work that can be emotionally heavy. Graduates often continue into a bachelor degree with credit for their studies, which is a common pathway in Australia. Confirm the credit arrangements with the institution before you enrol.
This course suits people already working in community services, youth work, disability support or pastoral care who want to formalise their skills. It also suits school leavers who want a practical start before committing to a degree, and mature-age students changing careers. If you are an international applicant, you will need to meet the institution's English requirement, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, and the Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. While you study, your visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which gives you time to work in Australia. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 116932C. Check the official page for current entry requirements, placement arrangements and unit details.
Employers include not-for-profit community organisations, state health departments, schools, private practice, and employee assistance programme providers. Further study, such as a bachelor degree, opens up registration pathways and clinical roles.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$36,720 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
