The Diploma of Practice Management is a one-year qualification for people who run, or want to run, the business side of a health or professional practice. You learn how practices actually operate: how they bill and claim, how patient or client records are kept and protected, how staff rosters and budgets are built, how compliance with privacy and work health and safety rules is maintained, and how a practice measures whether it is going well. It suits practice managers, team leaders, reception and administration staff stepping up, and clinicians who have ended up managing a clinic and want formal training for it.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 of the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one takes about one year of full-time study and is usually delivered over two or three study periods, depending on whether the provider runs semesters or trimesters. You enrol in units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass the required units to graduate. Delivery is often a mix of classroom or online theory and workplace-based assessment, and many providers let you complete some units while working in a practice. Because it is a vocational qualification, assessment is practical: you produce budgets, rosters, policies and reports rather than sitting only written exams. Confirm the exact unit list, study periods and credit point values on the official CRICOS listing and the provider's course page.
Core areas cover medical or practice terminology, billing and claiming under Australian systems such as Medicare and private health funds, financial management and budgeting, human resources and staff performance, risk and compliance, records and privacy obligations, and quality improvement. Communication and leadership units are usually included, because a practice manager spends much of the day dealing with patients, practitioners and suppliers. Some providers build in a work placement or structured workplace project, which is where the learning tends to stick.
Graduates work as practice managers, assistant practice managers, medical reception supervisors or administration coordinators in general practices, dental and allied health clinics, specialist rooms, aged care and community health organisations. The diploma can also be a stepping stone into a bachelor degree in business, health administration or management, with credit granted for units already completed, subject to the receiving institution's rules. If you are an international student, a Student visa normally allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish, depending on your circumstances. Check the official page for English requirements, intake dates and tuition, which is published on the CRICOS register.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$29,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
