The Associate Degree of Business Management at International Graduate Institute (IGI) is a two-year qualification built for people who want a practical grounding in how organisations run. You'll study the basics of accounting, marketing, management and business law, then apply them to real workplace problems. It's an AQF associate degree, which sits between a diploma and a bachelor degree, two years full-time, usually eight units a year, 16 units total. Each unit is worth credit points, and you'll need to pass all of them to graduate. The course is delivered on campus, with some subjects available online. IGI runs semesters, so you'll typically have two main study periods a year, plus an optional summer session. Assessment is a mix of exams, group projects, presentations and reports. You'll also complete a capstone unit in your final semester where you pull together everything you've learned by developing a business plan for a real or simulated enterprise. That's not a research thesis, it's a hands-on project.
Work-integrated learning is part of the deal. The course includes a work placement unit where you spend time in an Australian business, usually 100 to 200 hours depending on the provider. Placements can be in marketing agencies, accounting firms, retail head offices, local councils, not-for-profits or startups. You'll be expected to dress professionally, turn up on time and complete tasks set by your supervisor. The placement is assessed, and you'll write a reflective report on what you did and what you learned.
What skills do you actually pick up? You'll learn to read a balance sheet, prepare a simple budget, run a small team, write a marketing plan, understand basic employment law and use spreadsheets and business software. You'll also practise speaking in meetings, negotiating and giving presentations. These are the things employers ask for in entry-level roles. The course suits school leavers who want a faster path into work than a three-year degree, and mature-age students changing careers. If you're already working in retail, admin or hospitality and want to move into a supervisory or office role, this qualification can help. It also gives you a pathway: many students use an associate degree to get credit towards a bachelor degree later, often shaving a year off. You'll need to check with the receiving university about how much credit they'll give.
English requirements for international students: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for undergraduate and coursework postgraduate courses, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and IGI's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so you need to meet both. While you study, your visa lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. After you graduate, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia for a period depending on your qualification. Tuition fees are published on the CRICOS register, check the official page for the exact amount. The course code is 112718H. For details on units, credit points, placement hours and intake dates, always confirm with IGI or the CRICOS listing.
