The Diploma of Event Management is a one-year qualification that gets you ready to work on the planning and delivery side of events. You'll learn how events actually come together: how to scope a brief with a client, build a budget that holds up, run a site, coordinate suppliers and venues, market the event, and manage risk and safety on the day. Assessment is practical. You'll write event proposals, prepare operations plans, work through real or simulated event scenarios, and often help run an actual event as part of your studies.
Australian diplomas sit at AQF level 5. They're shorter and more hands-on than a bachelor degree, and they're built around units of study, each with a set credit point value. Most providers run two semesters or trimesters a year, with intakes at the start of each study period. The diploma is a full qualification in its own right, and it can also be a pathway into a bachelor degree with credit for the units you've completed, which shortens the degree. Ask the provider how much credit they'll grant and confirm the details on the official page.
Work-integrated learning is standard in this field, and many diplomas include a placement or industry project where you work with an event company, venue, festival, hotel or sporting club. That's where you learn the parts of the job you can't get from a classroom: how to talk to a supplier who's running late, how to keep a program moving when the weather turns, how to brief a casual crew. You'll finish with a portfolio of event plans, budgets and risk assessments you can show an employer.
This course suits school leavers who want a fast, practical entry into the industry, career changers moving into events from hospitality, tourism or administration, and people already working casual shifts at events who want a qualification behind them. It also works as a stepping stone if you're not sure about committing to a three-year degree yet. International students should check the English requirement for their provider and note that the Student visa has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. While studying, a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is available to eligible graduates. Confirm your course, fees and entry requirements on the official CRICOS page.
These roles sit across Australia's business events, tourism, hospitality, arts and sport sectors, from major city venues to regional festivals. Many graduates start in assistant or coordinator roles and move into management as they build experience.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
