The Diploma of Emergency Health Care is a practical qualification for people who want to work on the front line of emergency response. You study how the body works in a crisis, how to assess a patient quickly, and how to act when minutes matter. Expect units on anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, basic and advanced life support, trauma care, and managing medical emergencies such as cardiac events, respiratory distress and allergic reactions. You also learn about infection control, safe lifting and moving of patients, and how to communicate with patients, families and other emergency services when things are chaotic.
The diploma runs for 1.5 years. Australian diplomas at this level are usually made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points, delivered across semesters or trimesters. Some units are theory-heavy, others are almost entirely practical. You can expect a mix of lectures, tutorials, simulation labs and supervised clinical placements. Simulation is a big part of emergency health training, you practise scenarios on manikins and with role-playing patients before you ever step into an ambulance or emergency department. Work-integrated learning is standard in this field. Placements typically happen in ambulance services, hospitals, or community health settings, and you are assessed on real patients under supervision.
You graduate able to take a set of observations and work out what is wrong. You can manage an airway, perform CPR, control bleeding, splint a fracture, and assist with medications within your scope of practice. You learn to hand over a patient clearly to a paramedic or doctor. Just as important, you learn to stay calm, follow protocols, and look after your own wellbeing on shift work. Teamwork is built into every practical assessment because emergency care is never a solo job.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a hands-on health career without committing to a full nursing or paramedicine degree. It also suits mature-age students already working in health, security, defence, or community services who want to formalise their skills. If you are considering a bachelor degree later, a diploma can be a pathway, and some institutions offer credit towards further study. English proficiency is required for international applicants, typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After graduation, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official page for current unit lists, placement requirements and intake dates.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
