The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run casework, work in groups, and connect people with housing, health, income support and legal services. The course covers community development, counselling skills, case management, legal and ethical requirements, working with diversity, and responding to clients in crisis. You also learn how to keep records, write reports and work safely within an organisation's policies.
Australian diplomas sit at level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They are usually delivered over four semesters, or trimesters at some providers, and are made up of units of competency rather than the credit-point subjects you would see in a bachelor degree. Each unit has a set number of nominal hours. You must pass every core unit and the required electives to graduate. Assessment is practical: written tasks, role plays, case studies, projects and observation of your work with real or simulated clients. Many diplomas include a work placement unit, where you spend a set number of hours in a community services organisation under supervision. Placement is common in this field because employers expect you to have handled real cases before you finish.
Skills you build include interviewing and active listening, client assessment, case planning and referral, group facilitation, advocacy, conflict resolution, report writing, and working within legal and ethical frameworks. You also learn how to look after your own wellbeing in a job that can be emotionally demanding. The course suits people already working in community services who want a formal qualification, career changers who want to move into support work, and school leavers who want a practical pathway into the sector without committing to a three-year degree. If you later want to become a social worker, this diploma can be a stepping stone, but you should check with the university you plan to attend about credit. Social work registration in Australia requires a bachelor or master degree accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers, so a diploma alone does not make you a registered social worker.
International students study on a Student visa. That visa lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which allows you to stay and work in Australia for a period set by the Department of Home Affairs. English requirements for entry are set by the provider; for social work courses, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is common, and some providers ask for 7.0–7.5. The Student visa itself has a separate English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. Tuition fees for this course are published on the CRICOS register. Check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for current fees, intake dates, campus locations and placement arrangements.
These roles are found in not-for-profit community organisations, local councils, state government departments, disability and aged care providers, family and youth services, homelessness services, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations. Some graduates continue into a bachelor degree in social work or community services to widen their options.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$25,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
