The Diploma of Project Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to run projects properly, scoping them, costing them, scheduling the work, managing risk and reporting to stakeholders. You study the practical side of project work: how to write a project charter and a work breakdown structure, how to build and track a budget and a schedule, how to manage contractors and team members, and how to close a project out and review what happened. Assessment is typically a mix of assignments, case studies and simulated project documents rather than exams alone.
Australian diplomas sit at level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree and above a certificate IV. This one runs for one year full time. Institutions usually deliver diplomas over two or three study periods, semesters or trimesters, and you enrol in units of study, each carrying credit points. There is no honours year and no thesis at this level. Some providers build in a work-integrated learning component, such as a placement with an employer or a project you deliver for a real organisation, because project management is learned by doing it. Confirm the unit list, credit points and any placement requirement on the official course page.
By the end you should be able to take a brief and turn it into a plan someone can actually execute. That means defining scope, estimating time and cost, sequencing tasks, identifying risks and putting controls in place, managing change when the client moves the goalposts, and keeping stakeholders informed. You also pick up the software and documentation habits employers expect, schedules, registers, status reports and post-implementation reviews. Teamwork and communication get real attention, because most project failures are people problems, not spreadsheet problems.
This suits school leavers who want a fast, job-focused qualification before entering the workforce, and people already working in construction, IT, events, health administration or government who keep getting handed project work without formal training. It also works as a pathway: many students credit the diploma towards a bachelor degree in project management, business or a related field, which can shorten the degree. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after graduating. Check the CRICOS register for tuition and current details, and confirm English requirements, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the usual standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programmes accepted as equivalents.
Hiring industries include construction and infrastructure, information technology, government and defence, health and aged care, education, engineering and professional services. Employers range from large contractors and consultancies to small businesses that need someone to keep projects on track.
