The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five in Australian early learning services. You learn how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a program that suits each child, and how to keep them safe and well. The course covers child development, curriculum and pedagogy, health and safety, nutrition, working with families and communities, and the legal and ethical side of the job. You also study how to include children with additional needs and how to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities in a respectful way.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points. This one is delivered over one year, usually across two or three study periods depending on the provider. You will spend time in the classroom and a significant amount of time on placement in a registered early childhood service, because you cannot learn to work with young children from a textbook. Placement is where you practise observing children, planning experiences, guiding behaviour, and talking with families. Your assessor visits you on placement and you build a portfolio of evidence. There is no thesis at diploma level, but you do complete a final placement block that pulls together everything you have learned.
By the end, you can plan and implement a curriculum that follows the Early Years Learning Framework. You can document children's learning, set up indoor and outdoor environments, and respond to children's interests and needs. You learn to work within the National Quality Framework and the Education and Care Services National Regulations, which set the rules for ratios, qualifications, and safety. You also learn to communicate with families, work in a team, and handle the paperwork that comes with the job, such as accident reports and developmental records. English language skills matter here because you will be writing observations and talking with parents every day.
This diploma suits people who want to start working in early childhood education quickly, or who are already working in the sector and need a formal qualification to move into a room leader or lead educator role. It also suits people considering a bachelor degree later, because some universities give credit for diploma study. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check the official CRICOS page and the provider's website for current details on entry requirements, English, and start dates. The course is listed on CRICOS as 118911C.
These roles are found across Australia in private and community-run early learning centres, local government services, and not-for-profit organisations. The diploma meets the minimum qualification requirement for many educator positions under the National Quality Framework.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
