The Associate Degree of Arts Therapy at Ikon Institute of Australia is a two-year qualification for people who want to use creative processes as a form of therapy. You will study how art making, movement, sound and other creative media can help people express what is hard to put into words. The course covers counselling theory, human development, group work, ethics and professional boundaries, alongside practical studio work in different art forms. You also learn how to observe and respond to clients, and how to keep records and work safely within a therapeutic relationship.
Australian associate degrees are shorter than a bachelor degree and sit at Level 6 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one runs over two years, usually split into semesters or trimesters. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to pass the required units to graduate. Some units are theory-based, others are practical workshops or studio classes. There is a work-integrated learning component, which means you spend time in a supervised placement or community setting putting your skills into practice under the guidance of a qualified arts therapist or counsellor. Assessment is a mix of written work, reflective journals, practical demonstrations and a final project that pulls together what you have learned.
You learn to run creative sessions with individuals and groups, choose materials that suit a client's needs, and respond to emotional material without judging it. You practise listening, asking open questions and staying present. You also learn about trauma-informed practice, cultural safety and the legal side of working with people. By the end, you should be able to plan a session, explain your approach, and know when to refer someone on.
This degree suits people who already have an interest in art, music, drama or movement and want to turn that into a helping profession. You might be a support worker, a teacher's aide, a community artist or someone returning to study. It is also a pathway if you want to go on to a bachelor degree in counselling or arts therapy later. International students need to meet English requirements, typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, though some fields ask for higher. While studying in Australia on a student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check the CRICOS register and the official Ikon Institute page for current fees, intake dates and exact entry requirements.
These roles appear across Australia in the health care and social assistance sector, which is one of the country's largest employers. You will find work in not-for-profit organisations, government-funded community programmes, private practices, hospitals and residential care. Some graduates go on to further study in counselling or arts therapy to become fully registered practitioners.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
