The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that prepares you for supervisory and management roles in hotels, resorts, restaurants, catering companies and event venues. You study how a hospitality business actually runs: rostering and labour costs, food and beverage operations, stock control, budgeting, marketing, and the legal side of serving alcohol and managing premises. There is also a strong people component, leading teams, handling complaints, and looking after guests from check-in to checkout. Assessment is largely practical, so expect to spend time in training kitchens, simulated service areas and on placement rather than only in lectures.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. A full-time load is usually eight units per year across two semesters, though some providers run trimesters. To finish the advanced diploma you need to complete all core and elective units, typically around 30, and providers often build in a work placement unit where you spend a set number of hours in a real venue. Because it sits at diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, it is more hands-on than a bachelor degree and shorter, but it goes further than a Certificate III or IV in the depth of management content.
By the end you should be able to write a roster that meets wage budgets, cost a menu, manage stock and suppliers, run a safe and compliant venue, and lead a shift when things go wrong. You also practise the paperwork that hospitality managers deal with daily: incident reports, financial summaries, marketing plans and staff training records. Communication matters as much as technical skill, since much of the work involves coordinating kitchen, floor and front-office teams.
This course suits people already working in hospitality who want to move into supervision, career changers who like the pace of service environments, and international students looking for a practical qualification with a clear pathway into the Australian workforce. It also articulates into bachelor degrees in hospitality, tourism or business at some institutions, usually with credit for completed units. Entry generally requires completion of Year 12 or equivalent, and international applicants need to meet the college's English requirement, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 114468E, and you should confirm current fees, intake dates and unit lists on the official page.
Graduates often start in supervisory roles and move into department management within a few years. The qualification is recognised by Australian employers in the accommodation, food service and events sectors. International graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work after finishing; check the current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs. While you study, your visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight, which is a useful way to gain local experience alongside your course.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$29,200 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
