The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or middle-management roles, or who already hold one and want the paperwork to match. It sits at the diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it's a shorter, more applied qualification than a bachelor degree. Where a bachelor degree runs three years and an honours year adds a fourth, a diploma is typically delivered over two semesters or three trimesters of full-time study, and it's built around units of study rather than majors. Each unit carries a set number of credit points, and you need to pass the required units to graduate.
The coursework is practical. You look at how to lead a team, manage operational plans, manage budgets and financial plans, develop and use emotional intelligence, manage recruitment and onboarding, and handle workplace relationships and conflict. There's usually a unit on workplace health and safety, and one on continuous improvement, how to look at a process, work out what's going wrong, and fix it. Assessment is a mix of written tasks, case studies, role plays and projects based on real workplace scenarios. Because this is a diploma, the focus is on doing the job, not on academic theory for its own sake.
Many Australian institutions build work-integrated learning into diplomas like this one, a placement or a workplace-based project where you apply what you've learned in an actual organisation. Ask the college directly whether placement is part of your course, how many hours it involves, and whether they find the host organisation or you do. The skills you come out with are the ones employers ask for in supervisory roles: planning and allocating work, giving feedback, managing a budget, reading a profit and loss statement, and dealing with a difficult customer or staff member without escalating it. If you want to keep studying, a diploma often gives you credit towards a bachelor degree in business or management, though the amount of credit depends on the receiving institution and the units you've completed.
This course suits someone who is working, or wants to work, in a supervisory position and needs a recognised Australian qualification. It also suits international students who want a shorter, cheaper entry point into Australian business study before committing to a degree. If you're an international student, you'll need to meet the college's English requirement, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, and TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, which is separate from the college's requirement. On a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is worth looking into if you want to stay and work. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 110418C, and you should confirm fees, intake dates and entry requirements on the official page before you apply.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
