The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that sits at the diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework. It's a practical, hands-on course for people who want to run the show, a restaurant, a hotel department, an events team, a licensed club, rather than just work a section. You'll study the parts of hospitality that actually decide whether a venue makes money: rostering and labour cost, stock control and purchasing, food and beverage operations, budgeting, legal compliance, and how to lead a casual-heavy team that changes every semester.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, and each unit carries credit points. You complete them across semesters, with most providers running two teaching periods a year and a mid-year intake as well. There's no thesis at this level. The capstone is usually a practical management project or a supervised work placement where you take responsibility for a real service period, a function, or an operational improvement in a venue.
Work-integrated learning is central here, not optional. Hospitality employers in Australia expect graduates to have already stood on a floor during service, handled a till, dealt with a difficult customer, and worked a busy Friday night. Placement hours are typically arranged with hotels, restaurants, catering companies or event venues, and many students keep working in those same places after they finish. Assessment is mostly demonstration, you perform tasks, keep a logbook, and get signed off on competency, alongside some written work and portfolio tasks.
You'll cover food and beverage service management, accommodation operations, marketing and social media for venues, financial reporting and budget control, workplace health and safety, responsible service of alcohol and food safety supervision, and human resource basics like recruitment, induction and performance conversations. The point is to make you useful on day one as a supervisor or duty manager, and credible later when you're the one writing the roster and answering to the owner.
Who it suits: people already working in hospitality who want to move up, international students who want a qualification tied to a real industry with strong Australian demand, and career changers who like the idea of a job where the feedback is immediate. Entry is normally Year 12 or equivalent, though providers often accept relevant work experience instead. International applicants need to meet the English requirement, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets its own separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, which in this field is easy to use well. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is the usual pathway for eligible graduates. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check the official course page and CRICOS listing for current fees, intake dates and unit details before you apply.
These roles exist in hotels and resorts, hospitality groups, licensed clubs, catering companies, event venues, tourism operators and the food service arms of health and aged care. Some graduates go on to further study, and the diploma can often be credited towards a bachelor degree in hospitality or business, depending on the receiving institution's rules.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$25,900 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
