The Diploma of Horticulture Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to run horticultural operations, not just work in them. You study how plants grow and how to manage the people, budgets and schedules around them. Typical units cover plant identification and selection, soil and nutrition management, irrigation systems, pest and disease control, nursery and turf production, and the business side: supervising staff, costing jobs, planning production and meeting safety and environmental rules. Assessment is practical. You identify plants, diagnose problems, prepare growing media, set up irrigation, and write management plans for real sites.
This is an AQF diploma, so it sits below a bachelor degree and above a certificate III or IV. It is delivered over one year, usually across two or three study periods rather than the two semesters a bachelor degree uses. You enrol in units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass the required units to graduate. Some colleges build in a work placement or a supervised industry project, which is common in horticulture because employers want to see you handle a nursery, a landscape site or a production block. Ask the college how placement is arranged and whether it is paid.
You finish with skills employers actually ask for: scheduling irrigation, scouting for pests, keeping plants alive through a heatwave, supervising a small crew, quoting a job, and keeping records that satisfy auditors. You also learn to read a soil test and adjust a fertiliser program, and to plan planting and harvesting around the seasons. Those skills transfer across nurseries, turf farms, councils, landscape contractors, vineyards, orchards and food production.
This diploma suits a few groups. If you already work in horticulture and want to move into supervision, it gives you the management language and the paperwork. If you are changing careers from something indoors, it gets you into the industry with a recognised qualification. If you are an international student, it is a shorter, cheaper option than a degree, and it can lead into further study with credit. International applicants need to meet the college's English requirement, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent, and the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check the official CRICOS page and the college for current structure, entry rules and fees.
