The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run the show in hotels, restaurants, events and resorts, or move into a supervisory role after time on the floor. You study how a hospitality business actually works: rostering and labour costs, food and beverage operations, stock and purchasing, budgeting, legal compliance, and how to lead a team through a busy service. Assessment is largely hands-on, so you spend time in kitchens, service areas and simulated front desk environments as well as in the classroom.
This diploma runs 1.5 years and sits at Diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework. Australian diplomas are built from units of study, each carrying credit points, and delivered across semesters or trimesters depending on the provider's timetable. You will typically complete core units covering hospitality operations, leadership, finance and compliance, plus elective units that let you specialise, for example in accommodation services, food and beverage, or event operations. Some providers include a capstone unit or industry project where you pull everything together into a real operational plan. Because this is a vocational qualification, work-integrated learning is standard: you complete a set number of hours of practical placement in a licensed venue, hotel or event operation, and those hours count towards your qualification.
By the end you should be able to write a roster that meets a wage budget, cost a menu, manage stock and suppliers, handle a customer complaint without losing your cool, and keep a venue compliant with liquor, food safety and work health and safety rules. You also learn to read a profit and loss statement and make decisions from it. Group work and role plays are common, because hospitality is a people business and employers want to see how you handle pressure. English language entry for international applicants is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced or the college's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so check both.
This course suits people already working in hospitality who want formal recognition and a step up to supervisor or duty manager, and school leavers who want a hands-on qualification rather than a three-year degree. It also works as a pathway: many students use a diploma as credit towards a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business management. International students should note that a Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while studying, and on completion you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 120074F. Confirm current entry requirements, unit structure and fees on the official page before you apply.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$30,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
