The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification that prepares you to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. It's a hands-on course built around the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Standard, the same rules that govern every long day care centre, preschool and family day care service in the country. You'll study child development, plan and deliver play-based learning experiences, support children's health, safety and wellbeing, work with families from different backgrounds, and learn how to observe and document what children are learning.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of competency rather than the semester-based credit point system you see in bachelor degrees. Each unit covers a specific skill set, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. Delivery is usually a mix of classroom or online study plus a set number of hours of professional placement in a registered early childhood service, this is work-integrated learning, and it's mandatory. Placement is where you put the theory into practice: changing nappies, running group time, writing learning stories, and talking with families. Your assessor visits you on placement and signs off on your practical skills. Some providers offer trimester intakes, so you may be able to start in February, May or September depending on the campus.
You'll learn how to create a safe and stimulating environment for children, support their physical and emotional development, and respond to children who need extra help. You'll also cover legal and ethical requirements, including mandatory reporting, child protection, and workplace health and safety. There's a strong focus on working in partnership with families and respecting cultural diversity, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. By the end, you should be able to plan and implement a curriculum that meets the needs of every child in your care, and work as part of a team in a regulated service.
This diploma suits people who want to work directly with young children and are looking for a practical, job-ready qualification rather than a three-year teaching degree. It's also a good fit if you're already working in the sector as a certificate III educator and want to step up to a room leader or nominated supervisor role. International students should check the English language requirements carefully, most providers ask for IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, though teaching courses often require higher. Remember that the Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, which is separate from the college's entry requirements. While you study on a Student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight once your course has started. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia for a period. Always confirm the exact units, placement hours, intake dates and tuition on the official CRICOS register and with the college directly.
Australia's early childhood sector employs thousands of people across centre-based care, family day care, preschools and integrated services. Employers include not-for-profit community organisations, private childcare chains, local councils and school-based kindergartens. With further study, you can move into primary teaching or early childhood teaching, which requires a bachelor degree and teacher registration.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$12,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
