The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run case work, and connect people to housing, health, income support and legal services. Coursework covers community development, counselling and communication skills, working with diverse groups, legal and ethical requirements, and the safety and wellbeing of both clients and workers.
As a diploma, this sits at the vocational end of the Australian system rather than the university degree end. Delivery is typically split into study periods across the two years, with each unit carrying a set number of credit points. You will spend a large share of your time in supervised practical work, placements in community organisations, refuges, neighbourhood centres or family support services, because this field expects graduates to arrive with real client contact behind them. Assessment is usually a mix of written tasks, practical demonstrations, projects and placement reports rather than exams alone.
You finish able to conduct intake interviews, write case notes and reports, develop support plans with clients, work within privacy and duty-of-care rules, respond to people in crisis, and collaborate with other agencies. Group work, advocacy and community consultation are part of the picture too. Just as important is learning where your role stops and another service begins, and how to refer safely.
This suits school leavers, career changers, and people already working in care or support roles who want a recognised qualification. It also works as a stepping stone into a bachelor degree in social work or community services, with credit sometimes granted for completed units. International students should note the Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while studying, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English entry is usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, though social work pathways often ask for higher. Confirm current entry requirements, fees and intake dates on the official CRICOS listing and with Everest Institute of Education.
Employers include not-for-profit community organisations, local councils, state government community service departments, family and domestic violence services, homelessness and housing providers, youth services, and multicultural or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$24,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
