The Diploma of Photography and Digital Imaging is a one-year qualification at Entrepreneur Education, a private provider, and it sits at the diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework. That puts it a step below a bachelor degree but above a certificate IV. You come out with practical camera and post-production skills rather than a three-year academic grounding in visual art. The course is built around units of study, each carrying credit points, and you complete them over trimesters or semesters depending on how the timetable is set. There is no honours year attached to a diploma, and no research thesis. What you get instead is a lot of time behind a camera and in front of a screen.
Expect to start with the basics of exposure, composition and lighting, then move into digital workflow: file management, raw processing, colour correction and retouching. Studio work usually covers portraiture, product and still life, and you will likely spend time on location shooting. The digital imaging side takes in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, or equivalent software, and may touch on video capture and basic motion work. Assessment is mostly practical: folios, print outputs, client briefs and presentations. Some providers build in a work-integrated learning component, such as an internship with a studio, a publication or an events company, or a live brief for a real client. Ask the provider whether placement is included and how many hours it involves.
Diplomas are delivered by TAFEs, private colleges and some universities. They are usually one year full time, or longer if you study part time. Each unit has a credit point value, and you need to pass all required units to graduate. If you later want to go on to a bachelor degree, some institutions offer credit for diploma study, but that is decided case by case and you should confirm it in writing. International students on a Student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. After finishing, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, provided you meet the Department of Home Affairs requirements. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Student visa itself has a separate English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs, so check both.
This diploma suits people who want to work with images rather than write essays about them. School leavers who are not ready for a three-year degree, career changers coming from another field, and photographers who already shoot but want formal training in editing and studio practice all fit. You do not need a folio for every provider, but a willingness to shoot weekly and take critique matters more than prior qualifications. The course is also a reasonable pathway into a bachelor of photography or visual arts if you decide to keep studying. Confirm the current unit list, intake dates, tuition and English requirements on the official CRICOS register and the provider's page before you apply.
Australian industries that hire diploma graduates include commercial photography studios, advertising and marketing agencies, online retail, real estate, media and publishing, events and wedding businesses, and the arts sector through galleries and arts organisations. Some graduates go on to run their own practice, which in Australia means registering a business, managing GST if turnover requires it, and building a client base. Others use the diploma as a stepping stone into a bachelor degree. Check the official CRICOS register and the provider's page for the units, intake dates and any placement arrangements.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$23,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
