The Diploma of Hospitality Management at Enhance College of Technology is a practical, one-and-a-half-year qualification for people who want to run the show in a hotel, restaurant, café, events business or resort. You learn the operational side of hospitality, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office, food safety, rostering, budgeting, stock control and leading a team, and the business side that sits behind it: managing finances, marketing a venue, handling customer complaints and keeping staff safe. Assessment is competency-based, so you demonstrate skills rather than sit long written exams.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of competency, each carrying credit points. At this level you complete a set number of core and elective units, usually delivered over two or three study periods across 1.5 years. The college timetables both classroom theory and practical sessions in a training kitchen, restaurant or simulated front desk, and many units include a work placement component in a real venue. There is no honours year attached to a diploma, that sits above a bachelor degree. If you later want to continue to a bachelor degree, you may receive credit for completed units, subject to the receiving institution's policy.
Typical units cover customer service, commercial cookery basics, bar and beverage operations, accommodation services, workplace health and safety, hospitality law, human resource management and financial reporting. You learn to write rosters, read a profit and loss statement, plan a function, manage a difficult guest and supervise a shift. Group projects and role plays are common because the job is done in teams.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a fast route into supervisory work, career changers moving into hospitality, and international students who want an Australian qualification with a strong practical focus. It also suits people already working in the industry who need formal recognition to move into management. English proficiency is required for international applicants, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official course page for current unit lists, intake dates and credit arrangements.
Australian employers in these roles include hotels and resorts, pubs and clubs, restaurants, aged care and hospital catering, airlines, event venues, tourism operators and contract catering companies. The qualification is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
