The Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or middle management roles, or who are already in them and want formal recognition. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), which means it is practical and job-focused rather than academic. You will study how to lead a team, manage budgets and financial plans, develop and use emotional intelligence, manage business risk, and plan and implement business strategies. Assessment is mostly competency-based, so you demonstrate what you can do rather than just sit exams.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency. Each unit has a national code and a set of performance criteria you must meet. The Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management is typically delivered over two or three study periods (semesters or trimesters) within a single year. Some providers offer it full-time on campus, some blend face-to-face classes with online learning, and some deliver it as a traineeship or via recognition of prior learning (RPL) if you already have relevant work experience. There is no thesis or capstone research project at this level. Instead, you complete practical assessments that mirror real workplace tasks, such as writing a business plan, running a team meeting, or analysing a budget variance.
You will learn how to manage a team's performance, delegate work, give feedback, and handle conflict. You will work with financial information: preparing budgets, monitoring income and expenditure, and reporting to senior managers. You will look at risk management, workplace policy, and how to lead change. Communication skills are central. You will practise negotiating, presenting, and writing for different audiences. By the end, you should be able to take responsibility for a work area and contribute to the organisation's broader planning.
This course suits people who have some work experience and want to move up, or who have completed a Certificate IV in Business or similar and want to go further. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification that leads to work in management. If you are an international student, you will need to meet English requirements. The published standard for this level is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, or an equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. While you study, your visa allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. Check the official CRICOS page for this course (code 108818E) and the provider's website for the most current details on tuition, start dates, and entry requirements.
These roles exist across most Australian industries. The qualification is recognised nationally under the AQF, so it is portable between states and territories.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
