The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a hands-on qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You will study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe and well, and how to work with families and communities. The course covers child development, observation and assessment, inclusion and diversity, health and safety, and the legal and ethical side of working in children's services. You will also learn how to lead a room and supervise other educators, which is what sets a diploma apart from a certificate III.
This diploma runs for 1.5 years. Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each with a set credit value, and you need to complete all required units to graduate. Delivery is usually a mix of classroom or online study and practical placements in registered early childhood services. The placement is the heart of the course: you will spend time in real centres, working with real children under the supervision of qualified educators. Assessment is competency-based, meaning you need to show you can do the job, not just pass a written exam. Some providers offer semester or trimester intakes, so ask about start dates and study modes when you enquire.
You will learn to design and implement learning experiences that match each child's stage of development. You will practise observing children, documenting their progress, and using that information to plan next steps. You will study how to support children with additional needs, how to build respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities, and how to meet the National Quality Framework requirements that apply to every early childhood service in Australia. You will also cover first aid, child protection, and workplace health and safety. By the end, you should be able to take responsibility for a room, guide other educators, and talk confidently with parents about their child's learning.
This diploma suits people who want a practical, job-ready qualification and are happy to spend time on the floor with children. If you already hold a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, this is the next step up and can lead to room leader or supervisor roles. It also suits career changers who want to enter the sector without committing to a full teaching degree. International students should note the English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework programmes, though teaching and health fields often ask for 7.0–7.5. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. Always confirm the current tuition, intake dates and English requirements on the official CRICOS register or the provider's page before you apply.
These roles are found across Australia in long day care centres, preschools, kindergartens, family day care schemes, and outside school hours care services. Many graduates also go on to study a bachelor degree in early childhood education and become qualified teachers.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
