This four-year degree sits at the intersection of sport and business, with an international focus. You study how sport organisations make money, build audiences and run events across borders. Core business subjects cover marketing, management, finance and economics, then you apply them to sport: sponsorship and branding, event bidding and delivery, media rights, fan engagement, and the governance of clubs, leagues and governing bodies. Because it is a four-year Australian bachelor degree, you complete 24 to 32 units of study (each usually worth 6 or 12 credit points), typically over eight semesters. Some universities run trimesters instead, which can shorten the calendar but not the total credit points. Either way, the structure is the same: a set of core units, a choice of majors or minors, and electives. You can expect a capstone unit in your final year, often a sport business project or industry consultancy, where you pull everything together. Work-integrated learning is common in this field, through internships with sporting clubs, event organisers, media companies or sport marketing agencies.
Early units build your business base: accounting, marketing principles, organisational behaviour, business law and statistics. Then you specialise. Sport-specific units might look at the global sport industry, event management, sponsorship and fundraising, sport analytics, athlete management, and the legal and ethical issues around doping, betting and broadcasting. Many students take a semester abroad through an exchange partner, which fits the international title of the degree. Assessment is a mix of exams, reports, group projects and presentations. The international element is not just a label, you compare how sport is run in Australia, Europe, North America and Asia, and you look at the business models behind the Olympics, the English Premier League, the NBA and Australia's own AFL and NRL.
You learn to read a balance sheet, write a marketing plan, pitch a sponsorship proposal and manage a project team. You also pick up the softer skills that sport business runs on: negotiation, stakeholder management, and working with people from different cultures. Data literacy matters more every year, expect to use spreadsheets and sport analytics tools to make decisions. By the end, you should be able to step into an entry-level role and understand both the commercial and the sporting side of a deal.
If you follow sport closely and want a career in it but do not see yourself as an athlete, coach or physio, this is the business route in. It suits school leavers who are organised, comfortable with numbers and happy working in teams. It also works for people already in sport administration who want a formal qualification. English requirements for international applicants are set at IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for most undergraduate courses, though some fields require higher. This degree does not lead to professional registration, it is a business qualification, not a teaching or health degree. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 112684B. Check the official ECU page for the current unit list, majors and intake dates.
Australian employers in this space include the AFL, NRL, Cricket Australia, Football Australia, Tennis Australia, state institutes of sport, local councils, event companies, and the Australian operations of global brands. The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream lets eligible graduates stay and work after finishing, and while you study your visa allows up to 48 hours per fortnight during term. Confirm visa conditions with the Department of Home Affairs.
It typically takes 4 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
