About this program

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a programme that suits each child, and how to keep them safe and well. Units cover child development, play-based learning, curriculum planning, health and safety, nutrition, and working with families and communities. You also learn the legal and ethical side of the job: the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework, child protection obligations, and workplace health and safety.

Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one is delivered over one year, usually across two or three study periods depending on the provider's calendar. You complete a set number of units of study, each with credit points, and the course includes a mandatory work placement in a registered early childhood service. That placement is where you put planning, observation and behaviour guidance into practice under the supervision of an early childhood teacher or room leader. Assessment is a mix of written tasks, portfolios, direct observation in the workplace and a professional experience report.

Skills you build include observing and documenting children's learning, designing experiences that match their interests and developmental stage, communicating with families, and responding to incidents and emergencies. You also practise working in a team, following service policies, and keeping accurate records. The course suits people starting out in early childhood, career changers who want a practical qualification, and educators already working in the sector who need a formal diploma to move into a room leader or lead educator role. It is also a pathway to further study, such as a bachelor degree in early childhood education, with credit for prior learning often available.

English requirements for international applicants are set by the provider and the Department of Home Affairs. The published standard for most undergraduate and coursework postgraduate courses is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, but teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work usually ask for 7.0–7.5. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Student visa has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs, separate from the course requirement. While studying, a student visa generally allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight during the term. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, and you should confirm current fees, intake dates and English requirements on the official course page before applying.
