This double degree at Collarts is for people who want to play music seriously and understand the business that pays for it. You study performance, your instrument or voice, ensemble work, theory, ear training, stagecraft, alongside entertainment management: how gigs get booked, how tours are budgeted, how artists get signed, how rights and royalties work, how a venue or festival is run. Four years full time, delivered in trimesters, with units of study carrying credit points. You graduate with two awards: a Bachelor of Music Performance and a Bachelor of Applied Business (Entertainment Management).
Because it is a double degree, the structure is heavier than a single bachelor. Expect to move between rehearsal rooms and business classrooms in the same week. Performance units build technical command and the ability to hold a set in front of an audience; management units cover marketing, finance, contracts, event operations and artist development. Most Australian bachelor degrees are three years; this one runs four because it carries the full requirements of both awards. Assessment is largely practical, recitals, ensemble performances, presentations, business plans, project work, rather than exams alone.
Collarts is a small Melbourne institution, so classes are hands-on and industry-connected. Work-integrated learning sits at the centre of the course: performance students play real gigs, and management students work on real events, often with the same acts. You finish with a portfolio of shows played and projects delivered, plus contacts in the Melbourne music scene. Melbourne is one of the world's great live-music cities, and that is the point of doing this degree there.
It suits school leavers who already play and want a career rather than a hobby, and it suits people already working in music who need the business side formalised. If you want to be a session player, a touring musician, a band manager, a booking agent, a festival programmer or run your own label, this course puts both halves of that life in one qualification. International applicants need to meet Collarts' English requirements, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 104511A. Confirm entry requirements, unit structure and fees on the official Collarts page before applying.
