This double degree at Collarts lets you build two careers at once: you train as a musician and you learn how the entertainment business actually runs. It's a three-year bachelor's degree, full time, and you finish with two qualifications, a Bachelor of Music Performance and a Bachelor of Applied Business (Entertainment Management).
Australian bachelor's degrees are structured around units of study, each worth a set number of credit points. You typically enrol in four units a semester, and most institutions run two main study periods a year, with some offering a third trimester or summer session. Over three years you accumulate the credit points needed to graduate. In a double degree you spread those points across both fields, so you study performance and business units side by side rather than one after the other. Expect core units in your instrument or voice, ensemble playing, music theory and aural skills, plus business units covering artist management, live event production, marketing, contracts and finance. Many performance degrees finish with a capstone project, a recital, a recording or a major industry project, and business degrees often include a work-integrated learning unit, where you spend time with a real organisation. Collarts has strong links to Melbourne's music and events scene, so placement and industry project work is a normal part of study here. Confirm the exact unit list and capstone requirements on the official course page.
You graduate with practical skills on your instrument and the business knowledge to manage a tour, run a venue, book a festival or represent artists. The performance side builds stagecraft, rehearsal discipline and the ability to work in a band or ensemble. The business side teaches you how to read a contract, budget a show, pitch a sponsor and use data to sell tickets. That combination is rare. Plenty of great players struggle to make a living because nobody taught them the business, and plenty of managers can't talk to musicians. This degree closes that gap.
It suits school leavers who play seriously and want a career in music, and it suits people already working in the industry, techs, promoters, venue staff, who want formal qualifications. International students should note the English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check the official page for current fees, intake dates and unit details.
These roles sit across Australia's live music, festivals, touring, recorded music, arts administration and hospitality sectors. Employers include venues, promoters, record labels, artist management companies, arts centres, councils and community arts organisations.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
