The Diploma of Information Technology at CIHE Australia is a one-year qualification for people who want a working grounding in IT without committing to a full degree straight away. You study the basics that sit under most tech jobs: programming, networking, databases, web development and the security and support practices that keep systems running. It is practical, hands-on work rather than theory for its own sake. You write code, build and query databases, set up and troubleshoot networks, and work through the kind of tickets and problems that come up in real IT teams.
The diploma sits at level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree and above a certificate IV. It is normally delivered over two semesters across one year of full-time study, though some institutions offer a trimester calendar with three intakes a year. You complete a set of units of study, each worth a fixed number of credit points, and you need to pass the required credit points to graduate. Assessment is usually a mix of practical tasks, projects, written work and exams. Many diplomas include a capstone unit in the final semester where you pull your skills together on a larger project, and some build in a work placement or industry project so you spend time in an actual IT workplace before you finish.
Expect to come out able to write and debug basic programs, design and query a relational database, configure networks and apply security controls, build a simple web application, and document and support users. You also pick up the softer side of IT work: working in a team, gathering requirements from a client, and explaining technical problems to people who are not technical. Those skills matter as much as the technical ones when you are starting out.
This diploma suits school leavers who want an IT qualification and a pathway into a bachelor degree with credit for what they have already done, career changers who want to move into tech without three years of study, and people already working in support roles who want formal recognition. It is also a sensible option if you are not sure yet which part of IT you want to specialise in, because it gives you a taste of several areas before you commit. International students should note that a Student visa allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight while you study, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on the course and visa rules at the time. English proficiency is required for international applicants, typically IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent, and the Department of Home Affairs sets its own separate English threshold for the visa. Check the official CIHE Australia page and the CRICOS register for current fees, intakes and entry requirements.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,000 total. Fees change yearly — confirm with an advisor.
