The Associate Degree of Community Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals and communities affected by mental health issues and substance use. You will study how mental health conditions present, how alcohol and other drug dependence develops, and how to respond in ways that are practical, respectful and grounded in evidence. The coursework covers counselling and communication skills, assessment and referral, harm reduction, case management, group work, and the legal and ethical frameworks that shape practice in Australia. You will also look at the social determinants of health, trauma-informed approaches, and how to work with families, carers and communities.
As an associate degree, this sits at level 6 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, between a diploma and a bachelor degree. It is normally two years of full-time study, made up of units of study, each with a set credit point value. You will usually complete around eight units per year across two semesters or trimesters. The first year builds core knowledge in mental health, alcohol and other drugs, and communication. The second year moves into applied practice, including case management, group facilitation, and a supervised fieldwork placement in a community health, mental health or alcohol and other drug service. That placement is where you put your skills to work under supervision and build the hours and experience employers look for.
You will learn to conduct intake and assessment, develop support plans with clients, use motivational interviewing and other counselling techniques, respond to crisis and relapse, and work within multidisciplinary teams. You will also build skills in record-keeping, professional boundaries, self-care, and reflective practice. The focus is on community-based work rather than clinical treatment, so you will be ready to support people in their own settings: outreach, day programmes, residential rehabilitation, and general community health.
This degree suits people already working in community services, health or welfare who want to formalise their experience and move into a more specialised role. It also suits school leavers and career changers who want a shorter, applied qualification than a full bachelor degree, with a clear path into the workforce. If you plan to study in Australia on a student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. English requirements for international applicants are set at IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for this level of study, or an accepted equivalent. Always confirm the latest details, including tuition, intake dates and English requirements, on the official Chisholm Institute page and the CRICOS register.
These roles are found across the Australian community services sector: community health organisations, mental health services, alcohol and other drug treatment agencies, homelessness services, youth services, and non-government organisations. Some graduates continue into a bachelor degree to broaden their options or move into clinical or supervisory roles.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$47,088 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
