The Master of Information & Communications Technology at Canterbury Institute of Management is a two-year coursework master's for people who want to work in IT at a professional level. You'll study the core areas that employers in Australia expect from a postgraduate IT graduate: programming and software development, database design and management, networking and security, systems analysis, and IT project management. The later part of the degree lets you specialise, so you can push further into an area such as cybersecurity, data and analytics, or enterprise systems, depending on what the institute offers in a given trimester.
Australian master's degrees by coursework usually run one to two years full time, and this one is two. Study is organised into units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, delivered across trimesters or semesters. You'll typically complete a sequence of core units first, then choose electives, and finish with a capstone unit or a minor research project where you apply what you've learned to a real problem. Some units include work-integrated learning, an industry project, a placement, or a piece of client work, which is common in Australian IT degrees because employers want graduates who have already worked in a team on a live brief.
By the end you should be able to write and maintain code, design and query databases, plan and secure a network, gather requirements from a client, and run a project to a deadline and a budget. You'll also build the softer skills that IT roles demand: explaining technical decisions to non-technical people, working in a team, and writing documentation that someone else can pick up and use. Assessment is a mix of exams, assignments, group projects and practical work, not just tests.
This suits two groups. First, graduates from a computing or IT background who want to go deeper and come out with a postgraduate qualification. Second, people from another field, business, science, engineering, who want to move into IT and need a structured conversion. If you're already working in tech and want a formal credential, the coursework format fits around work reasonably well. International students should note that a Student visa normally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia for a period set by your qualification and circumstances. Check the current rules with the Department of Home Affairs.
English requirements for international applicants are usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for coursework postgraduate study, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institute's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so meeting the course requirement does not automatically meet the visa requirement. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 111202M, check there and on the official CIM page for the current fees, intake dates, unit list and any accreditation details before you apply.

Student Visa Student Visa Subclass 500 Refusals: The Reasons That Come Up Most
Most subclass 500 refusals trace back to four things: the Genuine Student requirement, funds evidence, course-progression logic, or an incomplete CoE. Here's what each one actually means and how to fix it before you apply.
