The Graduate Diploma of Business is a one-year postgraduate qualification for people who want a grounding in business and management without committing to a full MBA. You'll study core areas like accounting, economics, marketing, organisational behaviour and business analytics, then choose electives in operations, finance or strategy. It's coursework-based, taught through lectures, tutorials, case discussions and group projects, with assessment by reports, presentations and exams. The course sits at AQF level 8, one step above a bachelor degree and below a master's. It's a standalone qualification, but many students use it as a pathway into an MBA or a master's programme, sometimes with credit for the units they've already completed.
Australian postgraduate courses run on a semester or trimester calendar. You'll enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to accumulate the total the award requires. A full-time load is usually four units per semester, or the trimester equivalent. The graduate diploma typically doesn't include a research thesis, but some versions have a capstone unit where you work through an integrated business problem, often with an industry client. If your course has a work-integrated learning option, it might be a placement, an internship or a consultancy project. Ask the school what's available and whether it counts towards your credit points.
By the end you should be able to read a set of financial statements, build a simple budget, analyse a market, and explain why an organisation makes the decisions it does. You'll practise writing business cases and presenting to a group. Teamwork is a big part of it, because that's how most workplaces operate. The diploma doesn't make you a specialist, but it gives you the vocabulary and the frameworks to move into management or to talk credibly with people from finance, marketing and operations.
This course suits three groups: recent graduates from non-business degrees who want a business qualification before entering the job market; early-career professionals who've been working for a few years and need formal management training; and people changing careers who want a short, focused introduction to business before deciding on an MBA. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish. English requirements are set by the university and by the Department of Home Affairs for the visa; check the official page for the exact scores and any updates to the CRICOS registration.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
