The Bachelor of Nursing at Avondale University is a three-year professional degree that prepares you for registration as a nurse in Australia. You study how the human body works, how illness develops, and how to care for people across their lifespan. Core topics include anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, mental health nursing, aged care, community health, and acute care. You also learn the legal and ethical sides of nursing, including how to work within the Australian healthcare system and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Australian bachelor degrees are made up of units of study, each with a credit point value. You normally complete eight units a year across two semesters, or trimesters at some institutions. Avondale delivers this degree over three years of full-time study. The exact unit list and credit points are set by the university, so check the official course page for the current structure. A key part of the degree is clinical placement. Nursing is one of the fields where work-integrated learning is required before you can register, so you spend a substantial number of hours in hospitals, aged care facilities, and community health settings under the supervision of registered nurses. This is not optional — it is built into the degree and assessed.
You learn to take patient observations, administer medications, dress wounds, interpret test results, and communicate with patients and their families. You practise these skills in simulation labs before you go on placement. By the end of the degree you should be able to assess a patient, plan their care, carry out that plan, and evaluate whether it worked. You also learn to work in a team with doctors, allied health staff, and other nurses. The course suits people who want a hands-on job with clear purpose, who can handle shift work and emotionally demanding situations, and who want to work in healthcare without spending six years at university. It also suits mature-age students and career changers, as long as they meet the entry requirements.
International applicants must show English proficiency. For nursing, the common IELTS Academic standard is 7.0–7.5 overall, higher than the general undergraduate requirement of 6.0–6.5, because registration boards set their own English rules. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced, and Avondale's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs also sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. As a student visa holder you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you graduate, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may let you stay and work in Australia, provided you meet the requirements. Confirm all details, including tuition, on the official CRICOS register and the university's course page.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
