The Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to run programmes and teams in community organisations. You study how community services are funded, how to manage staff and volunteers, how to plan and evaluate services, and how to keep organisations compliant with Australian law and sector standards. Typical units cover operational planning, financial management, human resources, risk, and working with boards or committees of management. Assessment is practical: you write service plans, budgets and policies, and you respond to scenarios drawn from real community organisations.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. You complete the required units, and some colleges let you choose electives that suit your workplace. Delivery is usually over two semesters or three trimesters, and many students study while working in the sector. If you have already completed relevant units, you may be able to apply for credit through recognition of prior learning. The course does not include a research thesis; the final stage is usually a work-based project where you improve a process or service at your workplace or placement organisation.
Work-integrated learning is common in this field. You may complete a placement or a supervised project in a community organisation, which gives you evidence for your assessment and something concrete to discuss at interviews. You graduate able to lead a small team, manage a budget, write funding submissions, and report to a committee. Those skills are what employers in the sector ask for.
This course suits team leaders, coordinators and experienced support workers who want to move into management, and people returning to the sector who need a formal qualification. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification in community services. English requirements for international applicants are usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with equivalents accepted, and the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Check the official CRICOS page for course details, tuition and intake dates.
Employers include not-for-profit organisations, local government community services, aged care and disability providers, youth services, family support agencies, and community health organisations across Australia.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
