The Master of Missional Leadership is a two-year postgraduate degree for people who lead, or want to lead, Christian communities with a focus on mission rather than maintenance. You study how congregations and organisations engage their neighbourhoods, how leaders read a changing culture, and how theology shapes the practical decisions a leader makes week to week. Expect units on missiology, biblical and theological reflection, leadership and organisational practice, and the shape of mission in Australian and global settings.
Like other Australian master's degrees, it sits at AQF level 9 and is normally one to two years full time. The two years here are usually built from units of study, each carrying credit points, delivered across semesters or trimesters. Some students take it part time while serving in a church or agency. A capstone project or research component is common at this level, letting you dig into a question from your own ministry context rather than write a purely theoretical thesis. Where the field uses it, work-integrated learning or supervised ministry placement can form part of the credit.
Skills you come away with are concrete: reading a community and its needs, planning and evaluating mission initiatives, handling Scripture in a way that speaks to real situations, leading teams and volunteers, and managing the conflict and change that come with any organisation. You also learn to think theologically under pressure, which is the part most leaders say they needed earlier.
It suits pastors and ministry staff, denominational and NGO leaders, chaplains, and lay people moving into senior roles. It also works for graduates in other fields who are stepping into faith-based leadership. Australian institutions in this space often have strong church and agency networks, and the qualification is generally not a pathway to professional registration, so check with the provider about recognition within your denomination. International students should confirm English requirements, tuition and intake dates on the official course page and the CRICOS register, and note the Student visa (subclass 485) Temporary Graduate visa post-study work stream and the 48 hours per fortnight work limit during study.
Employers include churches and denominational bodies, faith-based NGOs and aid agencies, schools and hospitals with chaplaincy services, aged care providers, and community organisations across Australia.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$60,576 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
