The Graduate Certificate of Divinity - Chinese Language is a short graduate qualification taught in Chinese. It gives you a grounding in Christian theology and ministry while you study in a language you already work in. You will cover core areas such as biblical studies, theology, church history and practical ministry, with the aim of being able to read, discuss and write about these subjects in Chinese. It suits people already involved in Chinese-speaking churches, mission organisations or community groups who want formal theological training without committing to a full degree.
As a graduate certificate, this is a single qualification at AQF level 8. It is made up of a small number of units of study, each carrying credit points, and is normally completed over about 26 weeks. The exact units, their credit point values and any choice between them are set by the university. Assessment is usually by essays, exegetical work, reflective journals and exams rather than a large thesis. If you later want to continue, the credit points you earn here may count towards a longer award such as a graduate diploma or master's, subject to the university's rules.
You will learn to interpret biblical texts carefully, explain Christian doctrine clearly, and connect theology to the everyday life of a congregation or community. Because the teaching is in Chinese, you also build the vocabulary and written style needed for preaching, teaching and pastoral conversations in Chinese-speaking settings. Classmates often bring experience from churches, chaplaincy, welfare work or overseas ministry, so discussion tends to be practical as well as academic.
This course is for graduates who want to test their calling or deepen their understanding before deciding on further study. It also works for pastors, lay leaders and volunteers who need a recognised qualification to support their role. There is no requirement to be ordained, and the university expects applicants to hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent. International applicants need to meet the English requirement published for this course, and should check the official page for the current entry rules, unit list and fees.
It typically takes 26 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,144 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
