The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical, operations-focused qualification for people who want to run hospitality venues rather than just work in them. You study how a restaurant, hotel, function centre or club actually makes money: rostering and labour cost control, stock and purchasing, food and beverage service standards, budgeting and financial reports, marketing, and the legal side of liquor licensing, food safety and workplace obligations. Delivery is hands-on, with kitchen, bar and service training alongside the management units, so you graduate knowing what the floor looks like at 6pm on a Friday as well as how to read a profit and loss statement.
This is a 31-week course delivered under the Australian Skills Quality Authority framework, and the Australian Skills Management Institute is registered to deliver it to international students on CRICOS (course code 110353D). Vocational qualifications like this are built from units of competency rather than the semester-and-credit-point model used in universities. Each unit is assessed as competent or not yet competent, and you work through them in a sequence that moves from core service and operational skills into management and business units. There is no research thesis at this level. Assessment is by demonstration: practical service tasks, simulated workplace scenarios, projects, case studies and written questions. Many providers also arrange a work placement or industry-based component so you spend time in a real venue applying the units you have completed.
You learn to write a roster that meets a wage budget, cost a menu, control stock and wastage, handle a customer complaint that could escalate, brief and supervise a team across shifts, and keep the venue compliant with food safety, responsible service of alcohol and work health and safety rules. You also cover the commercial side: preparing operational budgets, analysing financial performance, developing marketing activities and managing supplier relationships. On top of that you build the soft skills hospitality runs on, communicating across cultures, leading casual staff who may be new to Australia, and staying calm when the venue is full.
This suits someone already working in hospitality who wants to move from serving to supervising, or an international student who wants a qualification tied to a specific industry rather than a general business degree. It also works for career changers who like the idea of running a cafe, restaurant, pub or events business and want the operational and compliance knowledge first. If you are an international student, note the Student visa work condition allows up to 48 hours per fortnight during study, which is a realistic way to build the industry hours employers ask for. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is the usual pathway for staying and working in Australia, subject to the Department of Home Affairs criteria. English entry is set at IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced, and the Student visa has its own separate English threshold. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm current units, intake dates, placement arrangements and fees on the official page before you apply.
Employers include hotels and resorts, licensed clubs, restaurants and cafe groups, catering companies, event and venue hire businesses, and the accommodation sector. The skills also transfer into contract catering, tourism operations and retail food service.
It typically takes 31 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$14,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
