The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is a one-year qualification for people who want to lead the learning and development side of an organisation. You study how adults learn, how to design training that actually changes what people can do, and how to run a training function or a registered training organisation (RTO). Typical units cover learning theory, instructional design, assessment and competency-based training, managing training resources, and compliance with the Australian vocational education and training (VET) framework. Expect to write assessment tools, plan a training programme end to end, and work through the standards that govern RTOs under the Australian Quality Training Framework.
Australian graduate diplomas sit at AQF Level 8, between a bachelor degree and a master's. This one runs for one year full time and is usually delivered over two semesters or three trimesters, depending on the timetable. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to pass the required credit points to graduate. Assessment is a mix of written work, practical tasks and projects rather than a single final exam. Some providers build in a capstone unit where you design and present a full learning programme, and many include a work placement or simulated workplace hours so you can show you can do the job, not just describe it.
You learn to analyse a skills gap and turn it into a training plan. You learn to write assessment instruments that meet the rules, moderate other people's assessments, and keep the paperwork an auditor will ask for. You also pick up the management side: budgeting a training department, leading trainers, and reporting on whether the training worked. The qualification is practical. Most of what you produce in class is the kind of document you would produce at work.
This course suits trainers, assessors and coordinators who are already in the VET sector and want to move into management, and managers from other industries who have been handed responsibility for staff training. It also suits people with a bachelor degree in a different field who want a fast, focused qualification in learning and development. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish, depending on your circumstances. Entry usually requires a bachelor degree or equivalent, and international applicants need to meet the English requirement published on the official page. Check the CRICOS register and the provider's page for current fees, intakes and English thresholds.
Hiring industries include vocational education and training providers, government agencies, defence, healthcare, mining and resources, construction, financial services, retail and not-for-profit organisations. Confirm current registration and visa requirements with the relevant Australian authorities.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$10,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
