The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to work in hotels, restaurants, events and food service, and eventually run them. You learn how the industry actually operates: how to manage a food and beverage outlet, roster and lead a team, control stock and costs, plan events, handle customer complaints, and keep a venue compliant with Australian health, safety and licensing rules. Assessment is mostly hands-on. You practise service scenarios, work through real budgets and rosters, and build the paperwork a manager deals with every day.
The diploma sits at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one takes 1.5 years. Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points, and you need to pass all required units to graduate. Delivery may run across semesters or trimesters depending on the provider's timetable, and some units are sequenced so you build skills before moving on. Because hospitality is a licensed and regulated industry in Australia, your units cover responsible service of alcohol, food safety and workplace health and safety, the certificates employers ask for before you step onto a floor.
Work-integrated learning is central. You complete a set number of hours in a real hospitality workplace, such as a hotel, restaurant, café or events venue, where you apply what you have learned under supervision. Some providers arrange placements; others ask you to find one and approve it. Either way, the placement is assessed and counts towards your qualification. This is how Australian hospitality training works, you cannot manage a venue you have never worked in.
Who is this for? School leavers who want a fast route into supervisory work rather than a three-year degree. Career changers who have done their time on the floor and want the paperwork to move up. International students who want an Australian qualification and post-study work rights. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, which is useful in an industry that hires around the clock. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, check the Department of Home Affairs for current rules. English requirements vary: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is common for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. Confirm the exact entry requirements, unit list, placement arrangements and tuition on the official course page and the CRICOS register.
Australian industries that hire: hotels and resorts, restaurants and cafés, pubs and bars, event and function centres, clubs, catering companies, and tourism operators. The qualification also gives you credit towards further study, such as a bachelor degree in hospitality or business, if you want to keep going.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$37,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
