The Diploma of Leadership and Management at the Australian National Institute of Business & Technology is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader or supervisor roles, or who already hold one and want to do it better. You cover the practical side of managing people and operations: how to plan and monitor work, lead a team through change, manage budgets and financial plans, build relationships with stakeholders, and handle the performance and development of staff. Assessment is competency-based, so you are judged on whether you can actually do the tasks, not just recall theory.
As a diploma, this sits at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. It is made up of units of competency, each with a credit point value, delivered over one year. Most institutions run diplomas across two semesters or three trimesters, and you enrol in a set number of units each study period. There is no research thesis at this level. The final units often pull the skills together through a work-based project or a simulated management task where you apply planning, leadership and budgeting to a real or realistic workplace scenario. Some providers build in a work placement or require you to be working in a relevant role so you can complete assessments on the job.
You learn how to write an operational plan and track it, how to manage a team's performance including giving feedback and handling underperformance, how to lead by example and support innovation, how to manage meetings and workplace relationships, and how to read and control a budget. You also cover workplace safety responsibilities and the legal side of managing people. These are the skills that show up in almost every supervisor job ad in Australia. Teaching is practical, with group work, case studies and role plays, and you are expected to contribute in class.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a fast, job-focused qualification, people already working in retail, hospitality, admin or logistics who want to move into a team leader role, and international students looking for a one-year Australian qualification that can lead into further study. Entry is usually completion of Year 12 or equivalent, or relevant work experience. International applicants need to meet English requirements, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institute's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check the official page for current fees, intake dates and unit lists. While studying, a Student visa holder can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after completing the diploma you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
