The Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or middle management roles. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree, and it is built around the practical side of running a workplace: planning and managing projects, leading and developing a team, managing budgets and financial plans, overseeing operational plans, and handling workplace relationships and conflict.
Australian vocational qualifications are made up of units of competency, each carrying credit points. You will usually study full time across two semesters, with some providers offering three trimesters a year so you can finish sooner. Assessment is competency-based, meaning you demonstrate that you can actually do the task, not just recall the theory. That often means written assignments, role plays, simulated workplace tasks and group projects. Many providers build in a work placement or a simulated business project where you apply what you have learned to a real or modelled organisation. You should check the official page for the exact unit list, delivery mode and placement requirements.
You will work through the core management functions: developing and using emotional intelligence, managing personal and team performance, leading effective workplace relationships, managing risk, managing recruitment and induction, and developing and implementing operational and strategic plans. The focus is on the skills employers actually ask for in supervisory and junior management roles: giving feedback, running a meeting, reading a budget, writing a report, and making a decision when the information is incomplete. You will also build the communication and problem-solving habits that let you move from doing the work to leading the people who do it.
This course suits three groups. First, people already working in a trade, retail, hospitality, health or office role who want to move into supervision. Second, school leavers who want a practical, job-focused qualification rather than a three-year degree. Third, international students looking for a shorter Australian qualification that leads into further study. On completion you can often get credit towards a bachelor degree in business or management, which normally takes three years full time, or an honours year on top of that. A master's degree is one to two years and a doctorate three or more, so the advanced diploma is a genuine stepping stone rather than a dead end.
International students on a Student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. After finishing, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream lets eligible graduates stay and work in Australia, though the specific stream and duration depend on your qualification and circumstances, so confirm the current rules with the Department of Home Affairs. Entry requires English proficiency. For this level, IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall is the common standard, and TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 105414E. Check the official page for current fees, intake dates and entry requirements.
Graduates typically move into first-line and middle management roles across Australian industries. The qualification is recognised by employers in retail, hospitality, health and community services, manufacturing, construction, logistics, government and not-for-profit organisations.
Some graduates use the advanced diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in business, management or a related field, which can open up roles in human resources, marketing, finance and general management.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
