The Diploma of Project Management is a one-year qualification that teaches you how to plan, run and close projects. You'll work through the practical side of project work: scoping what a client or organisation actually needs, building a schedule and a budget, managing risk, leading a project team, and reporting progress to stakeholders. Assessment is competency-based, which means you're assessed on whether you can do the task, not just whether you can write about it.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of competency, each carrying credit points, and delivered across semesters or trimesters. This one runs for one year. The units build on each other, so you'd typically start with the fundamentals of project scope and time management before moving into cost, quality, human resources, communications and procurement. Many diplomas finish with a capstone-style project where you manage a simulated or real project from initiation through to final review. Work-integrated learning varies by provider; some arrange placements or industry projects, so confirm the arrangements with the college.
You'll learn to write a project charter, develop a work breakdown structure, estimate and control costs, run risk workshops, manage contracts and suppliers, and handle the inevitable changes that come up mid-project. You'll also practise the people side: briefing a team, resolving conflict, negotiating with stakeholders and presenting status reports that people actually read. Documentation and compliance sit alongside this, because most Australian project roles require an audit trail.
This diploma suits people already working in a project support role who want formal recognition, career changers moving into project coordination, and international students who want an Australian qualification in a field that appears across construction, IT, events, health and government. It also provides a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree with credit for prior learning. On the AQF, a diploma sits below a bachelor degree, which is normally three years. International students should check the CRICOS register for the published tuition and confirm entry requirements, including English proficiency, with the college. While studying, a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream.
Hiring industries in Australia include construction and infrastructure, information technology, health and aged care, government, mining and resources, and professional services. Many roles sit inside PMOs (project management offices), and some employers look for registration with a professional body such as the Australian Institute of Project Management; check current requirements with the relevant body.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
