The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification built for people who want to run hospitality operations, not just work in them. You cover the parts of the job that decide whether a venue makes money: rostering and labour cost, stock control and purchasing, food and beverage service standards, budgeting and financial reports, marketing, and the legal side of liquor licensing, food safety and workplace relations. Alongside that you learn how to lead a team, recruiting, training, briefing staff before service, and handling the complaints and conflicts that come with a busy floor.
Australian vocational qualifications are made up of units of competency, each carrying credit points, and delivered across study periods that most providers run as semesters or trimesters. Assessment is competency-based: you either demonstrate the skill or you don't, and you're given the chance to be reassessed. The practical units are where most of your time goes. You'll work in a training kitchen, bar or restaurant, take orders, pour drinks, run a function, and then write up the shift, wastage, sales mix, staffing hours, the way a duty manager would. Many providers arrange a work placement or structured industry shift block in a hotel, restaurant, club or events venue, because the units on service and supervision are assessed in a real commercial setting. Your provider can confirm the exact unit list and placement hours on the official course page.
By the end you should be able to write a roster that holds its labour budget, cost a menu, run a stocktake, brief and supervise a team through a dinner service, and deal with a regulator or an unhappy customer without escalating the problem. Those are the skills employers actually test at interview. The qualification sits at advanced diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, above a Certificate IV and below a bachelor degree, which means it's practical and job-facing rather than academic.
It suits people already working in hospitality who want to move from the floor into supervision or management, career changers who want a hands-on entry into hotels, restaurants, clubs, catering or events, and international students looking for a qualification tied to an occupation on Australia's skilled lists. If you're an international applicant, you'll need to evidence English proficiency, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the usual coursework standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying on that visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is the pathway many graduates use to stay and work. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 110948K, check the official page for current fees, intakes and unit details.
Hiring industries include hotels and resorts, food and beverage service, clubs and pubs, catering and events, tourism operators, aged care and hospital catering, and airline and airport hospitality. Many graduates move into supervisory roles quickly because the qualification is assessed against real operational tasks rather than theory alone.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$41,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
