The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run the show in hotels, restaurants, events and food service. You learn how hospitality businesses actually work: rostering and leading a team, managing stock and suppliers, controlling costs, planning menus, handling customer complaints, and keeping the venue compliant with health, safety and licensing rules. Assessment is usually hands-on, so you spend time on service, kitchen and front-of-house tasks as well as writing up business plans and budgets.
This diploma sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework and is delivered over 1.5 years. Vocational diplomas are built from units of competency rather than the semester-by-semester structure of a bachelor degree, and each unit carries credit points. There is no honours year here, and no research thesis. Instead, most hospitality diplomas include a work placement or industry-based training component, because the field hires on demonstrated skill. You may complete shifts in a commercial kitchen, restaurant, hotel or events venue, and those hours count towards your qualification.
What you gain is operational confidence. By the end you can write a roster, cost a dish, manage a budget, lead a shift, deal with a difficult guest, and step into a supervisory role without needing someone to hold your hand. The diploma also gives you a pathway: many graduates use it as credit towards a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business management, which takes three years full time.
This course suits school leavers who want to start working in hospitality quickly, career changers who already enjoy the industry, and people already in a venue who want formal recognition before going for a supervisor or duty manager role. International students should note that English proficiency is required, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, and the Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official course page for current details.
These roles are found across Australia's accommodation, food service, pubs, clubs, catering and events industries, from city hotels to regional venues and tourism operators.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
