The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe, and how to work with families and communities. The course is practical. You learn the observation and documentation skills that educators use every day, and you spend time in real services putting those skills to work.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree and above a Certificate III. This one is delivered over one year, and like most Australian vocational qualifications it is built from units of competency rather than semester-long subjects. Each unit carries credit points and covers a specific area of practice, such as child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, and legal and ethical requirements. Assessment is competency-based: you need to show you can do the task, not just describe it. Most diplomas in this field include a supervised professional placement in a registered early childhood service, where you work alongside qualified educators and are assessed on the job.
You graduate able to plan experiences that match where each child is at, observe and record learning, support children with additional needs, and communicate with families. You also learn the compliance side of the job: regulations, national quality standards, workplace health and safety, and your obligations as a mandatory reporter. These are the skills that make you employable in a sector that runs on ratios and qualifications.
This diploma suits people who want to start working in early childhood education without committing to a three-year degree. It also suits educators who already hold a Certificate III and want to move into a room leader or lead educator role. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while you study, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish, depending on your circumstances. Check the official CRICOS page for current course details, tuition and entry requirements.
Employers include long day care centres, community preschools, kindergartens, family day care schemes, outside school hours care services, and early intervention providers across Australia. Some graduates continue into a bachelor degree in early childhood education to qualify as a teacher.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$14,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
